A Heart for Bible Study and Teaching
At Teach Me Thy Way, my heart is all about equipping and encouraging Bible teachers and learners of all ages. My mission is simple: to create Bible study resources that are clear, engaging, and easy to use, so that anyone, no matter where they are in the world or in their walk with God, can study scripture with confidence.
I am especially thrilled about this particular resource because it was a special collaboration with my husband, Tadd. He has always been my biggest supporter, and this time, he brought his incredible insight and love for scripture into the mix. Together, we poured hours into crafting these outlines, checking details, arranging the lesson structure, and thinking deeply about how to make each section not just informative, but meaningful.
These outlines are designed to help you follow the Israelites’ journey after the death of Moses, as they enter the Promised Land and navigate a season of great change and challenge. From the leadership of Joshua, to the turbulent cycles during the time of the Judges, and into the quiet but powerful story of Ruth, a foreign woman brought into God’s covenant people, you’ll witness God’s promises unfolding and His faithfulness at work in every chapter.
Understanding these books not only gives historical insight but also strengthens your foundation in the overarching story of Scripture from the promises given to the patriarchs to the fulfillment of God’s plan in the New Testament through Jesus Christ. It’s amazing to see how the historical account of the conquest of the Promised Land and the leadership of the Israelites connects with the bigger narrative of redemption.

Our goal is to honor God’s Word and help you develop a richer, clearer understanding of what He communicated through these inspired texts.
How Bible Outlines Can Strengthen Any Lesson
One of the most helpful aspects of using a Bible outline is that it allows you to approach any biblical text with structure and intentionality, without interfering with your personal reflection or interpretation. If you’ve ever found yourself overwhelmed by arguments or complex side topics that can arise when studying scripture, and outline can help. It can act as a compass, keeping you grounded in the core message and headed in the right direction!
Rather than following every tangent or debate, an outline helps highlight key events, ideas, and patterns. This is especially vital in Old Testament books like Joshua, Judges, and Ruth, where cultural context and geography play important roles. Having a clear outline lets you focus on the central themes, God’s presence, God’s command, the land of promise, and the role of God’s people, while giving you space to reflect on the text’s deeper meaning.
These outlines aren’t intended to replace in-depth study, but to enhance it. They act as guides that help you ask better questions, notice patterns, and build lessons that are faithful to the text. If you’re preparing a Bible class or homeschool lesson, outlines keep you focused and aligned with the text, not distracted by every commentary or blog post on the topic. You stay anchored in scripture, while still developing content that is engaging and thoughtful.
Outlines also help prevent burnout in preparation. Instead of starting with a blank page, you begin with a framework. That can be the difference between a stressful prep session and an exciting time of discovery. It’s not about spoon-feeding answers, it’s about providing a lens that lets you see the structure God has already woven into His Word.
Book-by-Book Overview
The Book of Joshua
The Book of Joshua picks up right after Moses’ death, with the nation of Israel standing on the edge of the Promised Land. It’s a dramatic and triumphant story filled with faith, battles, and God’s leadership. Joshua, who once served as Moses’ trusted aid, is now chosen to lead Israel. This change reminds us that God’s work continues even when leaders change.
Key events include:
- The crossing of the Jordan River, where God stopped the waters as the priests carrying the Ark stepped in, allowing the people to cross on dry ground
- The battle of Jericho, where the city walls fell after the Israelites obeyed God’s command and marched around for seven days
- The sin of Achan, who kept some devoted things and caused a tragic defeat at the battle of Ai
- The division of the land among the tribes of Israel, including Ephraim and the half-tribe of Manasseh
- The establishment of cities of refuge and other settlements in the hill country and east of the Jordan
Joshua wasn’t just a military leader. He was a servant of the Lord, always reminding the people to stay faithful to God’s presence and promises. His final words are a powerful call to commitment: “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15)
The Book of Judges
If Joshua shows us victory through faithfulness, Judges shows us what happens when God’s people forget Him. The phrase, “Everyone did what was right in his own eyes,” captures a society in chaos, drifting farther from God’s commands. The Book of Judges is a powerful reminder that when the people of Israel stray from God’s command, the consequences are serious, yet God’s mercy still reaches them.
This book covers several centuries of Israel’s history, a time when judges rose up to deliver the people from oppression. These weren’t kings but temporary leaders—individuals like Deborah, Gideon, Samson, and others—called by God to lead in times of crisis.
The story highlights the consequences of:
- Failing to completely drive out the Canaanite cities
- Disobeying God’s instructions and marrying outside the faith
- The rise and fall of these judges as they lead through difficult times
Judges is full of ups and downs—moments of courage and faith, but also some tough stories of failure and turning away from God. It reminds us what happens when people try to do things their own way. But even in the middle of all that mess, God’s faithfulness shines through. He never gives up on His people and keeps working through imperfect people to accomplish His plan.
One thing you’ll notice again and again is that every time the children of Israel cry out to God, He hears them and raises up someone to help, like Deborah, Gideon, or Samson. Even though the Israelite people keep turning away, God’s mercy keeps bringing them back. The book also shows what happens when there’s no strong, godly leadership, things start to fall apart. It really sets the stage for why Israel eventually asks for a king.
The Book of Ruth
Unlike the chaos we see in Judges, Ruth is a short but beautiful story about loyalty, hope, and God’s amazing care. It takes place during the same time as Judges but focuses on a Moabite woman who chooses to follow God and, in doing so, becomes part of the house of Israel.
This book explores:
- Ruth’s journey with Naomi, her mother-in-law, back to Bethlehem
- Her faithful decision to remain with Naomi: “Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God.”
- Her marriage to Boaz, a kinsman-redeemer, which mirrors God’s redemptive plan
- The birth of Obed, the grandfather of King David
Even though the book of Ruth is short, it’s packed with powerful lessons about God’s promises, the important roles outsiders can play in God’s plan, and how Jesus Christ would ultimately come from this very line. Her story shines a light on how individuals, sometimes from unlikely backgrounds, are part of God’s purposes. Ruth was a Moabite—considered an outsider by the Jewish people—yet because of her faithfulness, she became an ancestor of Jesus Christ.
There’s so much to notice in Ruth’s story: her loyalty to Naomi, her courage to take initiative, and how she grows into a woman of valor. It’s one of the most interesting things about the Old Testament—how a quiet story like Ruth’s can have such a profound impact on the biblical narrative.
Lessons That Still Apply Today
The lessons from these three books are not only historical; they are deeply relevant for our daily lives. Joshua teaches us about courage, obedience, and trusting God’s promises, even when the path ahead looks daunting. The battle of Jericho, where God’s people won by obeying an unusual command, shows us that victory doesn’t always come by human logic but by following God’s command.
Judges warns us about spiritual drift. When the people of Israel abandoned God’s law and pursued what seemed right in their own eyes, it led to moral and societal collapse. We are reminded to stay rooted in scripture and to raise up spiritual leaders who seek God first. Just as the Israelites needed guidance, today’s believers, God’s people, need biblical leadership and a firm foundation in God’s Word.
Ruth offers a beautiful example of personal faith and God’s providence. Her journey from Moab to Bethlehem mirrors the long journey many of us take from brokenness to redemption. Her story teaches us that our past does not define our future and that God can use anyone willing to follow Him. Ruth, a young woman from a foreign land, played one of the most important roles in redemptive history.
